A Recipe I Wish More People Made, An Overnight Dough to Mix Tonight + More Recipes for A Snowy Weekend

Hi Friends,

This week, as I found myself making my Great Aunt Rene's chicken for the millionth time, I found myself wishing more people would make it. It has become such a staple for me, not only because my family loves it, but also because I can make it ahead of time and leave it out — it tastes delicious at room temperature and also reheats beautifully in the microwave. The sauce is so, so tasty and so good with rice, which I make in the rice cooker, and which I find myself relying on more and more.

I love these sorts of meals because it means my kids can help themselves as they wish — they can eat before practice, after, or both! I can set everything out at 4 pm and call dinner done!

Anyway, Friends, if you've never made this chicken, I think you will love it, and I hope you find time to make it soon.

Also, are you ready for the storm? And have you pulled out your fleece-lined leggings? My parents are in town, and I wish the weather had been a little more welcoming...

Last night for dinner, I made Arctic char, roasted cauliflower, romesco (which I hadn't made in ages and which pairs so nicely with roasted vegetables of all kinds), and Lahey bread. Reminder: if you mix up some Lahey Dough tonight....

... you will be rewarded with a crusty boule tomorrow 🍞

Stay warm, Friends! Have a great weekend ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

Homemade Vegetable Stock

"Low effort, high reward! This broth is just so much better than any broth one could buy in the store, and it’s extremely fast. I’m making it for the butternut squash soup. An amazing recipe!"

Hi Friends, This week my oldest daughter turned 16, and we celebrated with cake and a trip to the DMV, which was shockingly painless. While she won't be making any solo trips to the grocery store or shuttling her siblings around for another six months, the prospect of having another driver in the house is thrilling. This week, too, the giant sandwich roll experiments continued, and I've finally posted the recipe. As noted in previous newsletters, this recipe is inspired by Jim Lahey's...

Friends, bonjour from Montreal! I am here with two of my kids, of course, for a hockey tournament, but with goals that mostly concern food, namely crepes and bagels, both of which we've found and devoured. Our hotel is located in Chinatown, and we arrived Thursday evening as nearly everything was closing, but found a spot that kindly took us in. Bellies full of dumplings, orange chicken, and spring rolls, the kids were thrilled. This week, I made a soup I hadn't made in ages. It's made from...

Friends, hello. This week, I became obsessed with the idea of making giant sandwich rolls for giant sandwiches. Inspired by Jim Lahey's bread recipe, I cut back the yeast, changed the hydration, and used cold water in an old overnight sandwich roll recipe. And after the first rise, I let the shaped loaves rise for 3 more hours before baking them. For the effort, the crumb is surprisingly light and airy: And it made a great giant sandwich: But I'm still fiddling with the recipe. If any of you...
