My Favorite Scones, A Favorite One-Bowl Quick Bread, Sourdough Discard Waffles & More

Friends, good morning.

Last night, I pulled an undated bag of frost-coated currant scones from the freezer. Given their very past-prime appearance, my expectations were low, and I questioned whether I should bother reheating them, but I pushed on this morning, crossed my fingers, and threw them in the oven.

Friends, they are so good! I love a scone, and I love this one so very much: punctuated with tiny currants, it's perfectly sweet and lightly lemony. What's more, it doesn't taste at all freezer-burnt, which makes me wonder if the often-recommended 3-month window for freezing is baloney?

Anyway, if you are looking for something quick and easy to make for the mother figure in your life this weekend, I can't recommend them enough. I've included a few more ideas below.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend πŸ’•πŸ’•

PS: Last Sunday, I launched a 7-day Sourdough Starter from Scratch Challenge. It was a lot of fun, and I loved hearing about everybody's experiences. Yesterday, I held Sourdough Starter Office Hours via Zoom, and I'm going to hold them again next Friday (details to follow). If you have any interest in building a starter from scratch, click here to join the challenge! It will require no more than 1-2 minutes of work a day for the next 7 days. Every morning for the next week, you will receive an email with a short video showing you what to do.

Review of the Week

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Rhubarb Custard Cake

"Absolutely amazing! & easy. Cut rhubarb from my garden in 1/2 inch pieces. Especially loved the lemony sweet/sour balance, texture (crumbly/custardy) & caramelized sugar crust."

... perhaps we should brush up on our bagel-making? πŸ₯―πŸ₯―πŸ₯― Hi Friends, There is a bakery* in Bolton Landing that makes excellent bagels, chewy but light and perfectly seasoned. Every time we visit Lake George, we pick up a dozen and eat them all week, toasted, slathered with cream cheese, and topped with juicy, thick tomato slabs: It's heaven. This week I found myself missing those bagels, so I decided to make a batch. I hadn't made bagels in ages, and I had forgotten how quickly the dough comes...

Friends, hello! As you may know, we've spent the week at Lake George with Ben's family. The weather cooperated, our simple meal plan delivered, and the kids spent every second on the lake, swimming, fishing, wakeboarding. As planned, we grilled every night, until the last, yesterday, when the groceries ran out, forcing us to order pizza instead πŸ•πŸ• It came from the Hulett's Landing Marina, which has a lovely little shop with all the essentials from coffee and beer to pizza and dried pasta to...

Friends, hello! This weekend we head to Lake George for our annual trip with Ben's family. We are a small crowd of 12, but a crowd nonetheless, and over the years we have learned to keep the nightly mealtime formula very, very simple: something grilled + a salad + bread. Minimal prep, minimal clean up is the name of the game with minimal kitchen space and without all of the tools/gadgets we rely on regularly. This year, for the first time ever, I made a few things ahead of time β€” some loaves...
